Azaleas & Rhododendrons

I  get more of a kick out of propagating rhododendrons & azaleas than maintaining a "show" garden.   That's why I tell people I have a "collection" rather than a garden.  Newsday called it "Organized Chaos"!  The garden is a woodland garden and it takes a lot of effort to make it look "natural".    Some people might say it resembles a jungle rather than a garden but that's just their opinion!

When I buy a plant I always try to root cuttings from it so I have several spares in case the original gets flattened by the forces of nature or if someone is looking for a variety that's no longer commercially available.

Please consult my stock list of plants by clicking on the appropriate link below.    Be aware that  I may not always have rooted cuttings of every plant, but, if you catch me early enough, I will try to stick some cuttings for you so you can get them later that year or the next spring.

My first responsibility is to preserve the stock plants that I have so I can reproduce more plants for people that share my interest in lepidote rhododendrons and evergreen azaleas.  Secondly, I want to be known for producing quality plant material and I will withhold plants that don't "measure up" to that standard.  Third, I don't want to be known as just another businessman that's more interested in revenue than personal relationships.  I'll consider you a friend if you share an interest in azaleas and rhododendrons.  Of course, you still have to pay for the plants.

Liners and young plants should be considered "delicate" and "grown on" in larger pots for several years before planting!  They should be protected from squirrels as well as from drying out.  Like all potted plants, they should be in a protected place during the winter months.

I'm not able to ship just yet and don't have the customary nursery that you can visit, but if you are interested in some plants, send an e-mail to JimsCreatures@verizon.net or call 631-495-6531 (7AM-4PM, Mon-Fri.).   I'll try to arrange a mutually convenient time and place for you to pick them up.

Evergreen liners and yearlings are supplied in 2" square pots.  Older plants are repotted in 3" and 6" pots.  Normally, liners and yearlings are priced at $3, plants in 3" pots are $4, and those in 6" pots are $5 each.  Deciduous plants are $6, $8, and $12 for 2,3, and 6" pots.

There's a partial hybridizer's name key at the end of the plant list.

My apologies for any misspellings of names.  Just let me know what they are and I'll make corrections as soon as I can.

Thanks, Jim Fry
